Alnarp’s Agroecology Farm: A Living Laboratory for Sustainable Agriculture

Established in 2021 by a group of passionate Agroecology master’s students at SLU, Alnarp’s Agroecology Farm was envisioned as a space where theory meets practice. The students sought to create a hands-on learning environment where farming skills could be honed and small-scale agricultural business realities could be explored. Over time, the farm has grown into an educational hub and research facility, fostering a sense of community and collaboration among local residents and stakeholders.

The initiative emerged to address a gap in practical agroecological projects at Alnarp. Supported by faculty and peers, the students drafted a vision, goals, and business plan for the farm, securing initial grants and a 400m² plot of land near Grohuset. This milestone marked the beginning of an inspiring journey toward sustainable farming and community engagement.

The farm adopts a ‘no-dig’ method, widely embraced by small-scale vegetable producers for its ecological benefits. By minimizing soil disturbance, this approach enhances soil health, promotes microorganism activity, and naturally suppresses weeds, eliminating the need for chemical interventions. While part of the garden holds organic certification, the farm’s methods exceed organic standards, embodying a commitment to regenerative practices.

Since 2023, Alnarp’s Agroecology Farm has incorporated perennial species and agroforestry principles into its design. This integration promotes synergies among plants, enabling natural pest control, nutrient cycling, and resilience against harsh weather. The farm continues to serve as a dynamic platform for innovation, education, and collaboration in agroecology, inspiring sustainable farming practices for future generations.

Detalhes do sistema agrícola

Alnarp’s Agroecology Farm aims to be more than just a productive agricultural space—it strives to serve as a living laboratory for sustainable farming. By blending hands-on practices with theoretical knowledge, the farm seeks to equip future generations of farmers and researchers with the skills needed to address the complex challenges of modern agriculture. Education, innovation, and community engagement lie at the heart of its mission, fostering a deeper understanding of agroecological principles while inspiring transformative change in the way food is grown and shared.

Qual é o seu sonho para o futuro da sua quinta e/ou da sua localização em geral?

The dream is to create a thriving, self-sustaining ecosystem that exemplifies regenerative practices and harmony with nature. Incorporating methods like no-dig farming and agroforestry, the farm aspires to lead by example, demonstrating the potential of small-scale, chemical-free agriculture. Over time, Alnarp’s Farm envisions becoming a beacon of collaboration, where students, researchers, and local communities unite to co-create solutions that nurture both the land and the people who depend on it.
