Quintal Agroflorestal Biodiverso: A University Extension Action with the CAPS - Nossa Casa Community

This agroforestry backyard project was implemented as part of a university extension program in collaboration with the CAPS - Nossa Casa (Psychosocial Care Center) community. It is a unique experience that integrates urban agriculture, agroforestry, food sovereignty, mental health, environmental education, and the humanization of relationships. By intertwining these elements, the initiative fosters holistic well-being and promotes sustainable practices in a community-centered approach.

The primary goal of this project is to create a space where the academic community can engage in urban agriculture guided by syntropic farming principles. This is achieved through intersectoral collaboration with the municipal health and environmental departments. Activities take place primarily in the courtyard of CAPS Nossa Casa and the Municipal Garden (Horto Municipal), where two Agroforestry and Biodiverse Backyards are being developed. These spaces serve as living laboratories for learning, innovation, and community connection.

The project bridges technical agricultural knowledge with mental health care, providing participants with an opportunity to cultivate not just food but also meaningful social and therapeutic interactions. It underscores the transformative power of agroecology in promoting mental and emotional resilience, especially for vulnerable populations. Participants gain practical skills, while also experiencing the benefits of reconnecting with nature and fostering sustainable practices within urban contexts.

¿Qué sueñas para el futuro de la granja o del lugar en general?

Quintal Agroflorestal Biodiverso embodies a dream of building a space where healing, learning, and sustainability converge. The team envisions a vibrant, biodiverse garden that not only produces healthy food but also nurtures mental and emotional well-being. By combining the principles of syntropic agriculture and agroecology, they aim to create a sanctuary where the community, including individuals undergoing psychosocial care, can connect with nature, find purpose in cultivating the land, and experience the therapeutic benefits of hands-on engagement with the soil. Their dream is to inspire a movement that integrates agroforestry practices into urban settings, making cities greener, healthier, and more inclusive.

The broader goal of this initiative is to foster systemic change by demonstrating the potential of agroecology to address multiple societal challenges. The project aspires to be a model for intersectoral collaboration, showcasing how partnerships between academia, health services, and environmental organizations can create lasting impact. By empowering participants with knowledge and skills in sustainable agriculture, the team aims to nurture a generation of changemakers who will advocate for food sovereignty, mental health support, and environmental stewardship. Their ultimate vision is a world where agroecological principles are woven into the fabric of urban living, enhancing the quality of life for all.
