Sistema Agroflorestal da Fazenda Grande

Brazil

Short description of your place and practices

The Agroflorestando Bacias project has developed 16 hectares of Diverse Agroforestry Systems across two Quilombola communities: Boa Vista do Pixaim and Fazenda Grande. This initiative, led by Humana Brasil, is supported by the Ministry of Regional Development as part of the broader Águas Brasileiras Program. The project exemplifies the integration of sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation, transforming landscapes while empowering traditional communities.

The Agroforestry Systems implemented in these areas prioritize biodiversity, combining native species with crops that support food security and economic sustainability for the Quilombola communities. These systems are designed to mimic natural ecosystems, promoting soil regeneration, water conservation, and carbon sequestration. By restoring degraded lands and enhancing the resilience of local ecosystems, the project contributes to the preservation of water resources while creating sustainable livelihoods for community members.

Beyond environmental restoration, the project fosters social inclusion and cultural preservation. It provides training and technical support to the Quilombola communities, enabling them to actively participate in the management and maintenance of the agroforestry systems. This collaborative approach not only strengthens the communities' connection to their ancestral lands but also positions them as key actors in the fight against climate change and environmental degradation. The Agroflorestando Bacias initiative stands as a model for integrating ecological restoration with social justice, demonstrating how traditional knowledge and modern techniques can work together to build a sustainable future.

Details of the farming system

The primary goals of the Agroflorestando Bacias project are to restore degraded lands, conserve water resources, and enhance biodiversity through the implementation of diverse agroforestry systems. By integrating sustainable agricultural practices with ecological restoration, the project aims to create resilient landscapes that support both environmental health and community well-being. It seeks to empower Quilombola communities by providing training, resources, and technical support, enabling them to sustainably manage their lands while preserving their cultural heritage. Additionally, the project strives to contribute to the fight against climate change by promoting carbon sequestration, improving soil health, and fostering food security and economic opportunities for the local population. Through these efforts, Agroflorestando Bacias aspires to establish a replicable model for sustainable development that balances ecological preservation with social and economic progress.

What is your dream for the future of your farm and/or your location in general?

The Agroflorestando Bacias project dreams of a future where agroforestry systems become the standard for sustainable land use, blending environmental restoration with social and economic empowerment. They envision a world where degraded lands are transformed into thriving, biodiverse ecosystems that provide food, water, and economic opportunities for local communities. By expanding these systems to more Quilombola and other traditional communities, they aim to create a network of green, resilient landscapes that combat climate change, protect water resources, and enhance food sovereignty.

Their dreams also include the widespread recognition and integration of traditional knowledge into modern environmental practices. They aspire to see Quilombola communities celebrated as stewards of biodiversity and leaders in sustainable development. By fostering partnerships and sharing the success of their work, the project hopes to inspire policymakers, organizations, and individuals to invest in agroforestry as a vital tool for ecological restoration and social equity. Ultimately, they dream of a harmonious coexistence between people and nature, where human activity nurtures, rather than depletes, the planet’s resources.
