Privacy Policy

Agroecology Map is a free/libre software and Creative Commons project that exists to share agroecological knowledge generated by communities. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and how you control your data while participating in this commons.

Our commitments

  • Agroecology Map is community-run free software (GPLv3 source code) and its public content is shared under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license.
  • We do not sell, rent, or transfer your personal data to advertisers or data brokers.
  • We minimize data collection and keep only what is needed to run the service and the commons responsibly.
  • We avoid third-party trackers. Any service providers we use must respect this policy and applicable privacy laws.

Data we collect

  • Account data: email, name, and a password hash to let you sign in and receive project updates you request.
  • Community contributions: places, descriptions, tags, comments, photos, and geolocations you choose to publish. These are public and licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0 so the community can reuse them with attribution and share-alike.
  • Device permissions you grant: location and camera/photo access when you explicitly allow them in the mobile app to add or update contributions. These stay tied to the contribution and are published only when you submit.
  • Technical logs: basic analytics and error logs (pages visited, device type, timing) to keep the platform reliable. These are aggregated and never used for advertising.

How we use data

  • Operate the map, authenticate accounts, and show the contributions you publish.
  • Moderate abusive content, protect the community, and keep the platform secure.
  • Send service messages you opt into (for example, account recovery or important project news).
  • Improve the software through anonymized metrics and crash reports.

How we share data

  • Public Creative Commons content: everything you publish (map points, texts, media, coordinates) is publicly visible and shared under CC BY-SA 4.0 while it stays on the platform. If you delete your account, we remove your contributions from the map and our storage, but third parties may retain copies they already reused under the license.
  • Personal data: not sold, rented, or traded. Shared only with essential service providers (hosting, email delivery, analytics without ads) under agreements that require compliance with this policy.
  • Legal and safety: we may disclose information if required by law or to protect the community and service from abuse.

Cookies and local storage

We use minimal cookies and local storage to keep you logged in, remember your language, and protect against fraud. You can disable cookies in your browser, but some features may stop working.

Retention

Account data is kept while you maintain an account. When you delete your account, we delete your personal data and remove your contributions (places, texts, media, coordinates) from the map and our storage; any remaining backups age out on their normal cycle. Technical logs are kept only as long as needed for security and reliability.

Delete your personal data

You can delete your personal information at any time:

  • Log in on the website, open your User Profile, and click DELETE.
  • In the Android/iOS app, open the main menu (left drawer) and request deletion.

Deleting your account removes your personal data and your published contributions from the service; previously shared Creative Commons copies by others may persist. You may also contact us to request access to, correct, or delete personal information you provided.

International transfers and security

Data may be stored in Brazil or in other locations where our hosting providers operate. We apply reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your data, but no online service is 100% secure.

Children

The service is intended for people 13 years and older. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13.

Changes

We may update this policy to reflect new features or legal requirements. We will post the new version here and update the "Last updated" date. Significant changes will also be announced in the service.
