Núcleo de Agroecologia e Campesinato da UFRPE – Ensino, Pesquisa e Extensão em Agroecologia

The Agroecology and Peasantry Center (NAC) at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE) was established in 2010 with the mission of fostering the study, dissemination, and practice of agroecology and peasant knowledge. Its objectives include encouraging the production of knowledge in these fields across international, national, regional, and local contexts. The center actively promotes discussions, activities, and projects within the university that highlight the importance of agroecology and peasantry, ensuring that this essential perspective gains visibility and recognition. By supporting historical and contemporary studies, NAC aims to preserve the memory and documentation of agroecological practices, serving as a vital resource for current and future generations.

A core aspect of NAC's work is promoting education in agroecology and peasantry. This includes organizing training programs, facilitating scientific and practical research, and recognizing innovative contributions through awards and public acknowledgment. The center also emphasizes the exchange of knowledge by establishing partnerships and collaborative networks with public agencies and similar institutions, both nationally and internationally. These exchanges aim to enrich academic and cultural understanding while fostering collective efforts to address challenges related to sustainable agriculture, rural development, and the empowerment of peasant communities.

Additionally, the center is committed to engaging with governmental and non-governmental organizations to promote agroecology and peasantry at all levels. It actively works to preserve a comprehensive bibliographic and documentary archive, ensuring that the knowledge generated through its initiatives is accessible and enduring. By combining academic rigor with cultural and artistic collaborations, NAC envisions a future where agroecology and peasant practices are central to creating equitable and sustainable systems. Its efforts aim not only to transform agricultural paradigms but also to inspire systemic changes in rural policies and practices, strengthening the connection between knowledge and action.

Qual é o seu sonho para o futuro da sua quinta e/ou da sua localização em geral?

The goals of the Núcleo de Agroecologia e Campesinato (NAC) at UFRPE center around fostering a deeper understanding and application of agroecology and peasant knowledge as tools for sustainable and equitable rural development. The NAC aims to stimulate research, teaching, and extension activities that address the historical and contemporary realities of agroecology and peasantry. By supporting the production and dissemination of knowledge, the center seeks to empower students, researchers, and rural communities to adopt practices that prioritize ecological balance, food sovereignty, and social justice. It also emphasizes the preservation of historical and scientific documentation, ensuring that the memory of agroecological and peasant contributions remains alive and accessible.

Another central goal of the NAC is to establish meaningful connections and collaborations with organizations and institutions at local, national, and international levels. Through partnerships and knowledge exchange, the center seeks to promote innovative practices, support the transition from conventional to agroecological farming systems, and influence public policies that strengthen family farming and peasant livelihoods. By organizing debates, creating awards, and fostering cultural and academic cooperation, the NAC aspires to become a leading reference in agroecology, driving systemic change and inspiring sustainable development practices across different contexts.
