The Agroecology Institute of Namibia is a social enterprise founded on principles of agroecology, driven by a passion for sustainability and dedicated to equipping the next generation of agricultural leaders with knowledge, skills, and values needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world. We are grounded in the wisdom of traditional knowledge and informed by cutting-edge research, our community trainings explores the intricate relationships between plants, animals, soil, water, and people. Through experiential learning opportunities, internships, and community projects, our training beneficiaries gain practical experience.
We are located but not limited to operating within the Ohangwena region which is part of the Central Northern Namibian regions where majority of farmers are subsistence agriculturists cultivating mainly rain-fed crops: millet (Mahangu), sorghum, maize and intercropping with different indigenous or Kalahari melons, other runners such as gourds, indigenous watermelons and legumes such as black eyed cowpeas, bambara nuts, ground nuts and indigenous/wild fruit trees. Historically, these crops have managed to feed the northern population across years.
However, the productivity of these subsistence farms is declining with each year and can no longer sustain the communities. This have led to Institutions such as ours promoting agricultural diversification through creating synergies between the dimensions of the socio-economic, ecology and science such as promoting horticulture under controlled environments, under irrigation, among other adopted climate-smart agricultural technologies and practices. So far the communities have been receptive on models such of sustainable agriculture, agroecology, organic agriculture, permaculture, conservation agriculture and etc, however there is still so much awareness and proactive grassroots work to be done.
We strive to create a learning environment that fosters curiosity, creativity, critical and system thinking. Our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion ensures that all voices are heard and valued, enriching the educational experience for everyone.
We are cultivating a brighter future for agriculture – one that honors the interconnectedness of all life, celebrates the richness of biodiversity, and empowers individuals to steward the land with care and respect. We dream to sow the seeds of sustainable Agriculture, to nurture, and grown them.
